How to Save a WhatsApp Chat as a PDF
A PDF is the ideal way to keep a WhatsApp conversation for good: it's readable on any device, easy to share or file, and doesn't depend on your phone. WhatsApp has no built-in "save as PDF" button, but getting there is quick. Here's the whole process.
Why a PDF is the right format to keep
- Portable — opens on any phone, computer or tablet with no special app.
- Stable — the layout is fixed, so it looks the same to whoever you send it to.
- Filing-friendly — easy to email, attach to a case, or archive alongside other documents.
Unlike a pile of screenshots, a PDF is one continuous, paginated document.
From WhatsApp to PDF, step by step
- Export the chat — iPhone: contact name → Export Chat; Android: three-dot menu → More → Export chat. Include media if you want photos in the document.
- Open the export in a viewer so it's rendered as a proper conversation.
- Save as PDF using the viewer's export or your browser's print-to-PDF option.
Tips for a clean PDF
- Light mode makes for a crisp, printer-friendly page.
- Decide on media up front — a text-only export gives a compact PDF; a media export produces a richer but larger one.
- Check the length — very long chats make large PDFs, so consider filtering to the period you actually need.

Unlock keys are issued instantly and work in any browser, on every export you make afterward — there's no subscription. If the PDF is for personal keeping or sharing, Unlimited covers it. If it might end up in front of a lawyer, an HR department, or a judge, use Court-ready — see our guide on using WhatsApp chats as court evidence.
Why browser print-to-PDF is not enough for anything formal
Every browser has a built-in "Save as PDF" in its print dialog, and it's tempting to just point it at the chat page. For a quick personal copy, that's fine. For anything you might need to defend, it falls short in ways that aren't obvious until someone challenges the document:
- No integrity hash. A browser print has no way to prove the PDF matches the original export — there's nothing to re-check against.
- No consistent page numbering or Bates stamps. Browser pagination depends on your zoom level and window size and repaginates differently every time you print.
- An incomplete transcript. Long chats often need scrolling or lazy-loading in a web view; a browser print can silently capture only what was rendered on screen at that moment, not the full conversation.
- Header/footer noise. Left to its defaults, a browser print adds the page URL, the date printed, and a title bar to every page — clutter that has nothing to do with the conversation.
A purpose-built export avoids all four: it walks the entire message list programmatically, numbers every page and message the same way every time, and — for the court-ready tier — prints a hash you can independently verify.
Page size: A4 or Letter?
ChatViewer's PDF export uses A4 by default, the standard nearly everywhere outside North America. If you're filing in the US or Canada, where Letter (8.5×11") is standard, print or file using whichever size your court or organization expects — both are readable regardless of page size, but consistency matters more for official filings than for a personal copy.
Saving a PDF with ChatViewer
Open your export in ChatViewer and click Export PDF for a clean, readable document — processed entirely in your browser, so the conversation is never uploaded anywhere. Choose Free for a quick 500-message copy, Unlimited PDF ($9) for the complete conversation without a watermark, or Court-ready PDF ($19) when the document needs to hold up to scrutiny.
Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp have a built-in save-as-PDF option?
No. WhatsApp can export a chat as .txt or .zip, but not directly as a PDF. You export the chat, then create the PDF from a viewer or your browser's print dialog.
Can I include photos in the PDF?
Yes. Export the chat with media, open the .zip in a viewer that shows media inline, and the images will appear in the saved PDF — embedded photos are included in both the Unlimited and Court-ready tiers.
Is there a limit to how much I can save as PDF for free?
Yes. The free tier covers the first 500 messages with a small watermark. For longer conversations, Unlimited PDF ($9) exports every message with no watermark.
What does the Court-ready PDF add over Unlimited?
A cover page with a case caption and exhibit label, sequential message numbers, Bates stamps, a SHA-256 hash of both the source file and the PDF, a verification page with re-check instructions, and a prefilled certificate template for your country.
Is it private to convert my chat to PDF this way?
Yes, with a client-side viewer. The export is read and turned into a PDF in your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server.
